They are a certified b corporation, registered living wage employer and members of 1% for the planet, donating 1% of turnover to environmental causes.

​Back in the 1980s, our founder Michael Barwell’s job was to clean and maintain commercial ships. Heavy-duty safety equipment, including a respirator, had to be worn for the tough work.
Michael was shocked to discover that many of the ingredients in the products he used at work could also be found in everyday household cleaners. Concerned by this, he was determined to look for naturally derived alternatives that would clean safely and effectively without harming people or the environment. In 1989, Bio-D was born.
Since Michael’s retirement, Lloyd, the first employee and now owner of the business, is at the helm. Instrumental in developing the current range, our Hull born and bred MD works with the team at Bio-D to continue Michael’s legacy; manufacturing cleaning products that are effective, ethical, and don’t cost the earth.
